Hofstra Tops Drexel, 62-51

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Drexel men's basketball team fell to the Hofstra Pride on Tuesday, 62-51, in New York. Shane Blakeney led the team with 15 points. The Dragons will be the fifth seed in the CAA Tournament. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
BY THE NUMBERS
Blakeney shot 50% from beyond the arc, rebounded the ball five times on defense and stole the ball once.
Victor Panov had nine points along with five rebounds, two blocks and an assist.
Garfield Turner scored eight while pulling in two rebounds, blocking a shot and stealing the ball once.
Drexel connected on 11 three-pointers on the night and won the turnover battle 14-11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons started the game strong, with threes from Panov, Martin de Laporterie and Blakeney giving Drexel a 9-4 lead with 16:34 to play. The Pride cut the lead down to one before an Eli Beard three made it 12-8 at 14:37 to play. A 4-0 Hofstra run tied things up, but another three from Blakeney put the Dragons back in front with 11 minutes remaining in the half. The Pride pulled even before Drexel retook the lead off a Kevon Vanderhorst three, which started a 17-7 Dragon run capped off by a Panov three with 1:25 on the clock. Back-to-back Hofstra baskets made it 32-26 at the half.
Drexel shot 52.9% from three in the first half while holding the Pride to a single basket from beyond the arc.
The second half began with a 17-5 Hofstra run to take the lead, 43-37, with 13:31 in to play. A pair of free throws from Turner cut the lead to four with 12:29 remaining. A 9-2 Pride run gave Hofstra an 11-point lead before a Josh Reed dunk cut the lead back down to nine with 8:14 on the clock. Hofstra responded with a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 16. The game ended on a 6-0 Drexel run.
The Dragons won the turnover battle 8-5 in the second half and shot 90% from the free-throw line on the night.

Drexel finishes the season as the fifth seed in the CAA. The Dragons will play the winner of Northeastern and NC A&T's game on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
