Drexel Tops Northeastern, 84-77, in Second Round of the CAA Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Drexel men's basketball team defeated the Northeastern Huskies 84-77 on Saturday in the second round of the CAA Tournament. Eli Beard led the team with 21 points. With the win Drexel will face Monmouth tomorrow. Tickets can be purchased here, while fans can follow the tournament here. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
BY THE NUMBERS
Beard was 13-15 from the free throw line and pulled in seven rebounds.
Victor Panov had 16 points on 5/7 shooting.
Martin de Laporterie scored a career-high 11 points on 5/6 shooting and rebounded the ball six times.
The Dragons outrebounded the Huskies 36-28.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons struck first, with a three-pointer from Panov putting Drexel on the board 18 seconds into the game. Back-to-back Husky baskets put Northeastern in front before a dunk from de Laporterie kicked off a 13-2 Drexel run, capped off by a layup from Kevon Vanderhorst to make it 16-6 with 12:58 left in the half.
A Northeastern basket cut the Drexel lead down to 18-10 at 10:41, but the Dragons responded with another 13-2 run capped off by back-to-back threes from Panov and Dillon Tingler with 6:24 remaining. The teams went back and forth with Drexel leading 39-22 at the half.
Drexel's defense held Northeastern to 35.7% shooting in the first half.
The two teams went back and forth to start the second half. A 7-2 Dragon run gave them a 21-point lead with 14:03 to play. Northeastern went on a 7-2 run of their own before back-to-back Drexel baskets increased their lead to 57-38 with 9:47 remaining.
A 17-4 Husky run brought the Dragon lead down to six with 4:16 left. Free throws from Panov capped off a 6-2 Drexel run to make it a 10 point game with 2:43 on the clock. The teams went back and forth with free throws before a 7-4 Husky run cut Drexel's lead to four with 26 seconds left. Free throws from Beard and Tingler ultimately sealed the win for Drexel.
With the win, the Dragons will have their sixth straight winning season.
