Drexel Routs Mercer, 18-7

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's lacrosse team routed the Mercer Bears to a 18-7 victory on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field. Alec Tulio and Witt Crawford each scored four goals for the Dragons. A total of 11 Dragons scored at least one goal.
Trent Layton wen16-for-20 on faceoffs against the Bears. In total, Drexel won the faceoff battle, 22-7.
Brendan Donnelly started in the cage for Drexel and made six stops.
Liam Kammar finished the game with three caused turnovers and three groundballs, along with a goal in Saturday's matchup.
The Dragons were quick out of the gate, striking first 40 seconds into the game. Caden Zadell buried a shot, assisted by Owen Knight. The Dragons went up by two with 4:33 left in the first quarter after Tulio finished a play started by Teddy Luthy.
Mercer answered with a goal for themselves at the 2:57 mark. A minute later, Liam Luzza added Drexel's third tally. Mercer closed the quarter by scoring a goal with 30 seconds remaining. The game entered the second quarter with Drexel ahead, 3-2.
Crawford scored his first goal on a man-up situation with 13:09 remaining and then scored again with 9:47 remaining to give Drexel a 5-2 lead. The Bears answered with a goal to trim the Drexel lead back to two. The Dragons then erupted with a three-goal run to go up 8-3 with 5:11 to play in the first half. Mercer managed to score one more goal before the quarter ended, but Drexel answered with 1:11 to head into the locker room ahead, 9-4.
Crawford opened Drexel's scoring in the second half with a goal at the 13:44 mark. Zadell and Pat Lyman added Drexel's next two goals over the course of two minutes. Drexel then added another two goals six seconds apart from each other at 11:06 and 11:00. Tulio made Drexel's lead nine and Layton won a face-off and took the ball to the house to put Drexel ahead by 10. Each team managed to score once more before the quarter was up.
The fourth quarter saw Drexel outscore Mercer, 3-2 to finish the game. Jack Porter, Anthony Chiango and Ty Gougler each added a tally for Drexel in the final frame.
Drexel returns to the field on Tuesday, March 3 to face the Villanova Wildcats. Action from Vidas Field is set for 4 p.m.
