Dragons Fall to Towson, 14-10

TOWSON, Md. – The Drexel men's lacrosse team fell to the #17 Towson Tigers on Saturday afternoon, 14-10. The Dragons were outscored, 6-2 in the first quarter, but then battled the Tigers to an 8-8 second, third and fourth frame. The Dragons fall to 2-1 in conference play.
Witt Crawford, Caden Zadell and Lincoln Wall each scored two goals to lead Drexel, while Conor Hooley and Gavin Kelly paced the Dragons in assists, each tallying two.
Brendan Donnelly started in the cage for Drexel and made 11 stops on 25 shots.
Trent Layton won a career-high 17 face offs for Drexel.
Off a Drexel failed clear and turnover, Towson scored its first goal of the game. The goal, scored by Alex Roussel. Less than a minute later, Towson scored its second goal of the game to push its lead to two and draw an early Drexel timeout.
With 8:32 remaining, Towson added another goal to push its lead to three and then added a fourth goal 20 seconds later.
Drexel got on the board for the first time with 6:36 remaining. Teddy Luthy scored the team's first goal of the game off of a pass from Owen Knight. Towson added its fifth goal on transition with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter. Four minutes later the Tigers extended their lead to five.
Drexel ended the quarter with a goal, receiving a tally from Crawford with six seconds remaining. The Tigers, led Drexel, 6-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Drexel opened the quarter with a tally by Kelly at the 9:42 mark. Eight seconds later, Layton won a face off and quickly passed down the field to Crawford, who buried a shot to put Drexel within two, 6-4. Knight put Drexel within striking distance with 6:37 remaining in the half. Knight beat multiple defenders to create space and bury a shot from 30 feet out.
Towson finally ended Drexel's four-goal run with 5:23 remaining in the half. After Towson called a timeout to set up a play with 3:36 remaining, the Tigers pulled back away by three. Towson led Drexel at the half, 8-5.
To start the second half, Drexel earned an extra-man opportunity with 11:18 remaining in the third and converted on the opportunity with 11:06 remaining. Ty Gougler checked into the game with his first goal. The Tigers launched into a four-goal run to close the quarter ahead by six, 12-6.
The Dragons opened the scoring in the fourth quarter. Caden Zadell scored Drexel's seventh goal to pull back within five. The Dragons scored back-to-back goals in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to pull back within four. Drexel even won the following faceoff and had the chance to pull within three, however a Towson save with 3:54 gave the Tigers a chance to bring the clock down. The Tigers turned the ball back over to Drexel with 2:37 remaining, leading to a Drexel timeout. The Tigers forced a turnover and scored on the other end to widen the lead back to five.
Drexel scored its 10th goal of the game with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter, then won the face off before calling a timeout.
The Dragons travel to Hampton, Va. On Saturday, April 4 to take on the Pirates for their fourth conference game of the season. Action from Virginia is set for 11 a.m. on FloCollege.
