Dragons Fall to #8 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Drexel men's lacrosse team was defeated by the #8 Virginia Cavaliers on Friday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va., 17-6.
The game began as a back-and-forth affair, with both teams unable to crack the scoreboard until under five minutes. Virginia managed to create an open shot to take a 1-goal lead into the media timeout. Virginia rattled off a pair of goals to take a 3-0 lead into the second quarter.
Drexel opened the second quarter with a tally by Crawford. As Drexel was nearing the end of the shot clock, Owen Knight found Crawford, who buried a last effort shot with three seconds remaining to pull within two.
Virginia answered with five goals to pull in front of the Dragons, 8-1. It wasn't until there were five seconds remaining that Drexel checked in with its second goal. Teddy Luthy took the ball from the restart to the crease. The junior beat the keeper and sent Drexel into halftime down six, 8-2.
Drexel started the second half on top receiving a goal from Joyner with 13:45 remaining. With 13:18 minutes left, the game entered a 30-minute weather delay. The Cavaliers were quick to add onto the lead, scoring less than 30 seconds after the resumption of the game. Tulio and Knight paired up for a goal with 11:27 remaining to pull back within five.
Virginia ended the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to extend its lead to 14-4.
UVA outscored Drexel, 4-3 in the final frame. After scoring a pair of goals to open the quarter. Liam Luzza scored an unassisted goal. With 5:43 left in regulation, then added his second tally of the day with 25 seconds remaining.
Drexel now prepares for the CAA Tournament, hosted by Towson. The Dragons will be the second-seeded team and will face the third-seeded Stony Brook Seawolves. Action from Johnny Unitas Stadium is set for Thursday, April 30, at 7:05 p.m. on FloCollege.
