Joe Palmer enters his third season with the Dragons. This season Palmer will lead the freshmen men's team. Palmer came to Drexel with experience coaching in some of the most successful Dad Vail rowing programs in the nation. Palmer previously served as the novice women's coach at Purdue University, where he led the novice women's eight to gold and the novice four to silver at the 2004 Dad Vail Regatta. Palmer began coaching at his alma mater, Marietta College, a very successful Dad Vail program. Palmer assisted John Bancheri, an accomplished Dad Vail coach.
Last season, Palmer was instrumental in the development and recruiting of the freshman class that included a novice four boat that took sixth at the IRA Championship. In the 2006-07 season, Palmer served as the interim men’s head coach and led the varsity eight to victories at the Bill Braxton Regatta and the Lehigh/Delaware tri-meet. The highlight of the season was Drexel's victory at the Bergen Cup, where they toppled city rival Saint Joseph's. The junior varsity also had a solid season with wins at the Bill Braxton Regatta, Philadelphia Frostbite, the Lehigh/Delaware tri-meet and the Lehigh dual meet.
Prior to arriving at Drexel, Palmer produced nationally competitive varsity men's four and freshman eight crews at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, where he was the men's head coach.
At Marietta, Palmer was a three-year varsity letterwinner on the Pioneers' varsity heavyweight team. He won two gold medals and a bronze in four Dad Vail Regattas. During his senior year, Marietta captured the men's team championship at the 2002 Dad Vail Regatta, its first since 1973. Palmer graduated from Marietta in 2002 with degrees in advertising and public relations.
Palmer is a 1998 graduate of Atlantic City High School where he was a three-time varsity letterwinner. As a freshman, Palmer rowed at Holy Spirit High School for current Drexel director of rowing Paul Savell. Palmer has been a member of the Margate City Beach Patrol for the past 13 years and currently resides in Margate, N.J.
