Drexel University Athletics
Vidas Athletic Complex serves as the primary outdoor athletics facility for Drexel University, located at 4300 Powelton Avenue in Philadelphia. It is a hub for outdoor varsity sports, intramurals, club athletes, and student recreation.
It is home to several of Drexel's varsity programs, including Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Field Hockey, and Softball teams. Along with numerous club sports teams, intramurals, and West Catholic High School Football and Girl Flag Football teams.
The complex features state-of-the-art turf fields, stadium lighting, spectator seating, and dedicated team facilities.
At the heart of the complex is Vidas Field, a fully renovated synthetic-turf stadium that hosts Drexel’s Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse programs. Originally built in 1963, Vidas includes permanent soccer goals, full-size markings, bleachers along the east sideline, stadium lighting, and a press box for game operations and broadcasts. Vidas is currently under renovation, adding a new artificial turf from Sprinturf that will be ready for the 2025-26 Athletic Fall Season.
Adjacent to Vidas is the new Vidas Bubble Field, completed in 2025. It is a new synthetic Sprinturf field and air-supported bubble structure adjacent to Buckley Field. This new facility provides year-round indoor training opportunities for varsity teams, club sports, and recreational programs.
Adjacent to Vidas Bubble Field is Buckley Field, a water-based EdelGrass surface designed specifically for field hockey. Buckley is equipped with lights and bleacher seating and underwent a resurfacing project in 2017.
Next to Buckley Field is Maguire Field, a Sprinturf synthetic field that serves as a practice area for West Catholic High School Football and other recreational activities. Directly across from Maguire is Drexel Softball Field, outfitted with dugouts, fencing, and windscreens. Additionally, there are nine regulation tennis courts that make up the home of Drexel Tennis programs, that were resurfaced in recent years.
The complex is anchored by a Friel Fieldhouse that includes locker rooms, athletic training facilities, equipment rooms, and coaching offices. Gameday experiences are enhanced by amenities such as the Kopp Lounge & Patio, which features grilling stations and spaces for team or alumni events. Public restrooms and water fountains are located near the main entrance, and parking is free and available on-site.
Vidas Athletic Complex is named in honor of Vincent Vidas, a Drexel football All-American and benefactor. The complex has undergone several upgrades through alumni support and fundraising campaigns. A 2018 initiative aimed to transform the venue into a more modern stadium environment with enhanced seating, scoreboard, concessions, and other amenities. A two-floor press box was constructed to replace the temporary structure for the working media. Equipped with air conditioning and a new sound system, the press box not only provided room for working media, radio, and VIPs to view home events, but also provided an aesthetically pleasing addition to the field.
Vidas has been home to numerous athletic events like non-conference/conference games, CAA Conference Championships in Men’s Soccer, Women’s Lacrosse, and Field Hockey in recent years. As well as a practice location for the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships, held at Lincoln Financial Park. Along with being host to outside events like Icarus Cup, Premier Ultimate League games, Ultimate Frisbee Association games, Premier Lacrosse League practices, and other camps/clinics.
Upon his passing in 2017, Vidas' legacy will embody the pillars of Drexel Athletics, generating pride and excellence for future generations of Dragons for years to come.
