Howard Rallies to Defeat Drexel
12/31/2005 12:00:00 AM
Washington, D.C. - Narissa Suber (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) scored a career-high 24 points including an 11-for-11 performance from the free-throw line, but Howard's (4-6) full-court trap spurred a run in the final five minutes that led to Drexel's (5-5, 0-1 CAA) 62-52 demise to close out 2005 and non-conference play.
Catherine Scanlon (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) posted her 22nd career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Kira Karlstrom (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) matched her career high with 10 boards as well. Drexel led by 11 points with 4:44 remaining but Howard went on a 25-4 run to close out the game.
The Dragons held the Lady Bison to 16 points in the first half, point-wise, the best defensive performance has had in one half of play this season. The Dragons led by seven at the half and pushed the lead to 13 in the first five minutes of the second period.
Howard's Melloni Benson led the Lady Bison on a run to cut the lead to four points at 32-28 with 11:54 on the clock. But Suber scored 11 of the next 13 points, six of them from the charity stripe, and took a 48-37 lead on a Delise Johnson (Queens, N.Y./Martin Van Buran) free throw with 4:44 remaining. But the Dragons' third-leading scorer Nicole Hester (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) fouled out with just under 10 minutes in the game and the Dragons scored just four more points in the game. Asha Santee and Shannon Carlisle keyed the Lady Bison stampede that closed out the game.
Drexel matched a season high by grabbing 41 rebounds and Karlstrom's four offensive caroms also matched the team's individual-best performance for the season. Howard's full-court trap pestered Drexel for the duration of the game and forced Drexel to commit several costly turnovers in the final minutes. The loss snaps a three-game win streak for Drexel.
The Dragons return to conference play in earnest next weekend, traveling to play Northeastern on Friday, Jan. 6 at 7:00 p.m. and Hofstra on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 2:00 p.m.
