Chilly Three-Point Shooting Sinks Dragons

Philadelphia, Pa. - Catherine Scanlon (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Narissa Suber (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) combined to score 37 of Drexel's 50 points. But the conference's leading scorer Kyra Kaylor put together a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double to lead William & Mary (6-7, 2-2 CAA)over Drexel (6-7, 1-3 CAA), 58-50
The Dragons cut what had been a 13-point William & Mary lead to six points midway through the second half. Suber reeled of six straight points on a pair of layups and two free throws which made the score 40-34. But the inimitable Kaylor guided the Tribe back to a comfortable nine-point lead with a spinning layup and a three-pointer from the corner. Freshman Dani Kell hit what proved to be a back-breaking three-pointer to push William & Mary's lead to 50-38.
Suber provided another spark for the Dragons at the 5:13 mark when she poached a perimeter pass and scampered down the court to feed Kira Karlstrom (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) for a layup. Devin James missed the second of two free throws and Suber drilled her only three of the game off a feed from Nicole Hester (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) to make the score 51-46. Drexel would force two more turnovers down the stretch and the Tribe would obligingly miss five of 10 free throws in the final five minutes but Drexel only mustered five points in the duration of the game.
The Tribe got out to a 11-point lead in the first half after shooting a sizzling 60 percent from the floor. Drexel hit just 9-of-25 field goal attempts in the period and went 0-for-7 from beyond the three-point arc, to go into the locker room trailing 37-26.
The Dragons were uncharacteristically cold from deep. Drexel, who is the CAA's second-leading three-point field goal producer, shot just 2-for-19 from three-point land. The Dragons did not hit a three-pointer until the 4:52 mark in the second half. Suber, who is ranked among the top 25 in the nation in threes per game, went 1-for-7, but she used her ability to drive to the basket to score four of her five field goals. She also went 8-for-11 from the free-throw line.
Although the team did not shoot well, Drexel worked hard on the boards to gather 11 offensive rebounds which led to nine more shot attempts than the Tribe. But the team shot just a shade over 35 percent from the floor which wasn't enough to complete the comeback. Hester, despite not scoring a point, contributed 10 rebounds and a pair of steals. Scanlon grabbed seven boards in the game, narrowly missing a Drexel record-tying fourth consecutive double-double.
Next up for Drexel is the Old Dominion on Sunday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
