Elegars Career-High 20 Points Lead Drexel Past Towson, 69-61
1/23/2006 12:00:00 AM
The Dragons trailed by four in the second half but scored 12-straight points to take a 44-36 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Every time it appeared Drexel would pull away, Towson and Neal answered. The La Salle transfer set a Towson record with seven three-pointers and had six of those in the second half, including one to tie it a 56-56 at the 3:28 mark. Drexel answered when Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military Academy) sank a pair of free throws and Elegar scored on the next two possessions, first with a jumper and then with two free throws. That gave Drexel a six-point lead with just over two minutes remaining.
Drexel jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and held the Tigers scoreless for almost six minutes to start the game. Bashir Mason (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's) had eight of his 13 points in the first half and made a pair of three pointers, but Towson held Drexel scoreless for the final 5:18 of the half to take a 26-24 lead at halftime.
Kenell Sanchez (Camden, N.J./Bishop Eustace) had 14 points and seven rebounds for Drexel. Dominick Mejia (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) was held to just six points but did have a career-high seven assists. Crawford led the team with eight rebounds and had four blocked shots.
The game started late as the backboard at the North end of the gym shattered when Randy Hampton dunked a ball during pregame warm-ups. Hampton suffered a few cuts but no one was seriously hurt. A new backboard was put in place and the game started a 8:10 p.m.
Drexel plays five of its next seven games on the road. That stretch begins on Thursday night when the Dragons travel to Norfolk to face Old Dominion. The Monarchs are tied for the top spot in the CAA with a 7-2 mark
