Richmond, Va.--VCU's B.A. Walker sank a 17-foot jump shot as time expired to give the Rams a 62-60 win over Drexel on Saturday night. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Dragons, who mounted a furious comeback to tie the contest with only 13.9 seconds remaining after trailing by as many as 13 in the second half.
VCU (9-4, 3-2) controlled most of the contest as the Dragons (9-6, 3-1) struggled early, making just one of their first 13 shot attempts. VCU held a 30-22 lead at the break after shooting 52 percent from the floor and holding Drexel to just seven field goals in the first 20 minutes. The Dragons trailed 60-50 with 3:45 to play, but went on a 10-0 run to tie the score. Frank Elegar started the rally with a put back, and Kenell Sanchez sank four free throws during the stretch. After VCU's Jesse Pellot-Rosa missed a one-and-one with 39 seconds left, the Dragons tied the contest when Bashir Mason drove to the basket for a lay-up to tie the game. VCU called a timeout and Walker nailed a jumper from just inside the three-point stripe with Bashir Mason and Chaz Crawford's hands in his face. The ball fell through the net as the buzzer sounded to give the Rams the win.
Chaz Crawford had one of his best games of the season, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Dominick Mejia led the Dragons with 24 points and made four three-pointers. Nick George led VCU with 22 points. Drexel returns home to face UNC Wilmington on Thursday night.
