Philadelphia, Pa. — Drexel freshman #Carly Snyder# and junior #Kimberly Kabernagel# each scored to help put the Dragons past the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders, Tuesday evening at Vidas Field. The Dragons are now 3-3-1, while the Highlanders drop to 0-8 on the season.
Junior #Ashley Nettuno# and sophomore #Lauren Steins# played well in the back, helping the Dragons keep the ball on the offensive end for the majority of the first half. Drexel got on the scoreboard at the 40:15 mark, when #Stacey Blevins# booted a corner kick directly to Snyder, who headed the ball past Highlander goalkeeper, Angelica Sepulveda. The Dragons took 21 shots in the first period and held NJIT to 0.
Drexel remained in control during the second half, taking 13 shots and eight corner kicks while allowing NJIT to take only two shots and earn one corner. The Dragons converted another corner kick with 30:19 remaining in the game when junior #Aleka Yiantsos# set up Kabernagel for an insurance goal, making it 2-0.
Drexel sophomore goalkeepers #Kaitlin Bond# and #Erica Lippitt# saw little action in the contest as the Dragons outshot the Highlanders, 34-2. Bond played just over 73 minutes when Lippitt went in to mind the goal for the remainder of the game, helping the Dragons post their second-consecutive shutout. Bond added to her career shutout school record, as she recorded her eighth in just her 22nd career start as a Dragon. Sepulveda kept NJIT close by finishing with 12 saves.
The Dragons open Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. when they take on William & Mary at Vidas Field. The Dragons return to their home turf for a 3:00 game against Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 24.
