Harrisonburg, Va. – Bashir Mason (Jersey City, N.J.) led three players in double figures with 17 points and Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military) grabbed 14 rebounds as Drexel (12-2, 4-0 CAA) defeated James Madison, 65-54. It was the 10th straight win for the Dragons, who are off to their best start since the 1995-96 season.
Drexel opened up an early lead and held on despite a late James Madison rally. JMU's Joe Posey made four three-pointers in the final 1:21 of the game to cut into the lead, but Drexel was 12-for-14 from the line in the final 2:17 of the game to seal the victory.
The Dragons made seven three-pointers in the first half on their way to a 31-18 lead at the break. Dominick Mejia (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) had four of those treys, accounting for 12 points in the half. He finished the game with 16 points. The Drexel defense allowed just six field goals and held the Dukes to just 30 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.
Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) came off the bench to score 13 points. The sophomore was 3-for-4 from long range. Drexel shot 43 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Dukes, 31-27. Mejia came up with a season-high five steals.
The Dragons return to Philadelphia for a CAA showdown on Thursday night with conference-favorite Hofstra. Both teams enter the game with 4-0 records in league play. The game can be seen on CN8 and can be heard on WNTP 990 AM and on the web at drexeldragons.com.
