Philadelphia - Drexel rowing opened its fall season at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday as the men's varsity eight finished seventh among the 13 boats with a time of 13:42.6. The men's junior varsity eight posted a third-place finish crossing the finish line at 14:17.0, 20 seconds ahead of city rival Temple. Drexel also had an entry in the Dad Vail eight race that featured several novices that competed in their first race. The boat finished with a time of 15:20.6.
In the season's first regatta, the Drexel rowers had to deal with a considerable headwind that lead to choppy waters on the Schuylkill through much of the race. The regatta was the first at Drexel for new head rowing coach Paul Savell. “Our goal for this race was two fold," said Savell. "First, for the varsity to get good competitive racing and find our base line versus our competition and second to give our brand new novice rowers real race experience.”
The varsity eight boat consisted of coxswain Steve Matyas, Doug Allcorn in the stroke seat, Greg Pierce in the seven seat, Jon Klenk in the six seat, Alan Fody in the five seat, Austin Barolin in the four seat, Chris Hillenbrand in the three seat, Tom McPhillips in the two seat, and Mike Niles in the bow seat.
Drexel's next race will be on Oct. 27 at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.
