Philadelphia, Pa. - Molly Dacey and Christina Rodriguez both hit their fourth home runs of the season as part of an 11-run Drexel barrage during the second and third innings of game one. Drexel (16-15, 6-8 CAA) went on to put away the Explorers (14-19) 12-2 in five innings. In the nightcap La Salle held off the Dragons to win 7-2 and salvage a split.
Sandi Wambold went 4-for-6 on the day with three RBIs. Lena Aiken went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs, she is just two hits shy of her 100th career hit.
Game One
Katrina Gaudier got the win for Drexel in the opener, improving her record to 9-4 on the season. She allowed two earned runs in five innings from the circle with three walks and two strikeouts. Drexel put up five runs in the second inning after trailing 1-0 early and broke open the game with a six-run third inning.
Dacey led off the second inning with a solo shot to left center and the Dragons went on to bat around in the inning. Gaudier drove in two runs with a single to right field and Brianne Brown placed a hit into right field to plate another run, making it 5-1 in Drexel's favor.
Rodriguez would get things going in Drexel's big sixth inning with a two-run shot hit through a driving rain over the fence in right centerfield. Brown added another RBI single and Wambold plated two with a hot grounder up the middle. Molly Dacey lifted a fly ball to right field deep enough to allow Ashley Botelho to tag and score from third base to make it a 11-1 game.
The Dragons would tack on one more run in the fifth inning on some aggressive base running by Lena Aiken after her second hit of the game. Carla Waldron, who went 2-for-3 and also scored two runs in the game, singled Aiken in for Drexel's 12th run of the game. La Salle scored once in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to prevent a mercy-rule victory for Drexel.
Game Two
Laura Beth McCreesh scattered nine Drexel hits and pitched out of enough jams to earn her fifth pitching victory in the nightcap for La Salle. The Explorers took advantage of nine Drexel walks, aided in part by a steady rain throughout the game. Amanda Shattuck incurred the loss, dipping to 4-5 on the season.
Wambold, Dacey and Gaudier each had two hits in the game but none of the combined six knocks drove in a run. McCreesh kept Drexel off the scoreboard until the fourth inning when Dacey led off with a double and came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Explorers held a 4-1 lead through the sixth inning when the Dragons appeared to be poised to break the game open. With runners on first and second, Aiken pulled a ball to the left side. Pinch runner Victoria Hanks was tabbed for runner's interference, negating what would have been a bases-loaded opportunity for Drexel. The next batter, Christina Rodriguez, singled to drive in a run, making it 4-2. But with runners on second and third McCreesh struck out Gaudier to end hte inning.
La Salle would score three runs in the bottom of the frame to pull away from the Dragons, 7-2. McCreesh would make the lead hold up by retiring the side in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Drexel hosts CAA power Hofstra this weekend for a three-game set at Drexel Field. Saturday's doubleheader is set for an 11:00 a.m. pitch.
