Fairfax, Va. - Lena Aiken and Brianne Brown combined to go 3-for-6 in Sunday's series finale against George Mason to close out their Drexel careers. The duo of seniors accounted for half of Drexel's six hits in a tough 1-0 loss to the Patriots (19-34, 5-16 CAA). The Dragons ended a record-breaking offensive season with a 18-20 record and a 7-13 mark in conference play.
The lone run in the game came in the fourth inning for George Mason. The Patriots got the lead runner on and moved her to third on a bunt single and a sacrifce. Sarah Martin hit a fly ball down the left field line. Left fielder Christina Rodriguez made the catch in foul territory but was unable to throw out the runner, Shaniqua Steele, who tagged and scored from third base.
Drexel's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fifth when Lisa Williams tripled off of starter Becky Anderson, who had kept the Dragons in check for much of the game, with one out. But the Dragons couldn't bring her home as Rodriguez got called for runner interference on her way to first and Lena Aiken grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.
Kristen Beaver went 2-for-3 in the game, including a single to lead off the last inning. Sandi Wambold moved her into scoring position with a bunt before Carla Waldron and Williams grounded out to third base to end the game.
Katrina Gaudier turned in her third quality start in as many games for the Dragons this weekend. She allowed just one earned run on six hits scattered over six innings. She walked four and struckout two batters and dropped to 11-11 in her freshman campaign.
Anderson picked up her second shutout of the Dragons on the weekend. She improved her record to 9-15 and is the only pitcher to shutout Drexel this season.
Drexel closed out one of its most successful offensive series in the program's history this season. The team set new marks for batting average (.305), home runs (28), runs batted in (182) and slugging percentage (.448). The squad also broke single-game marks for runs and doubles. Three Dragons reached the 100-hit plateau this year and several individual records also fell. Brianne Brown set or matched records for single-game, single-season and career home runs, she also took over the all-time lead in walks and is second all-time in RBIs.
