Philadelphia, Pa. – Drexel and Howard battled to a 1-1 tie at the Drexel Invitational Tournament held at Vidas Field on Friday night. The Dragons looked as though they would shutout the Bison, but Howard scored a goal with just under two minutes remaining to force the extra session.
Drexel got on the board in the fifth minute of the contest. Freshman Thiago Assumpcao drilled a shot with his left foot that beat Howard goalkeeper Chris Taylor. It was Assumpcao's first career goal. That was all the scoring in the first half.
The Dragons controlled the action for most of the second half, but couldn't add to their lead. Late in the game, Howard's Guilherme Fonseca fed Lamar Hyde down the left side. Hyde beat the Drexel defense and fired a shot past Drexel's Derrec Mongan to tie the contest at 1-1.
Drexel had two outstanding chances to win the match in the second overtime period. Taylor made a big save on a header from in close that looked like a sure Dragon goal. The next time down field, Drexel again had a chance on a cross, but the shot went just wide.
Taylor made five saves in the game for Howard. Mongan's defense played well in front of him as he made just one save in the game. Drexel will host Rider University on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the final match of the Drexel Invitational. Howard will face Temple at noon on Sunday prior to the Drexel match.
