Drexel Splits Pair of Matches at Virginia Duals

Philadelphia – The Drexel fought hard against No. 3 Oklahoma State in an opening round match at the 2008 Virginia Duals but the Cowboys pulled out a 35-12 victory. In the consolation bracket Drexel easily disposed of Duquesne, 37-3. Three Dragons prevailed against the country's third-ranked team, Oklahoma State, including a win by fall by Billy Haydt (Bath, Pa./Northampton). Steve Mytych (Wyoming, Pa./Northampton) and Ryan Hluschak (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) each won their match by decision.

Hluschak earned a hard-fought 3-1 decision over 13th-ranked Newly McSpadden before Haydt pinned Kevin Wainscott to close the Cowboys' lead to just 16-12. Oklahoma State reeled off the next four matches to win. Against Duquesne, Mytych opened the match with a major decision victory while John McDermott topped Jayk Cobbs, 7-4, at 133 pounds. Hluschak earned a technical fall victory. Justin Wieller and Kyle Frey also won matches both with bonus points; Wieller earned a major decision while Frey earned his first win by fall in a 285-pound match.

The Dragons continue in the 2008 Virginia Duals on Saturday, Jan. 12 with a match against Kent State.
