Philadelphia – Drexel held a 12-11 lead with four matches remaining against Stanford but the Cardinal recovered to win the non-conference match, 24-12. The Dragons won four of the first six matches but could not hold off Stanford at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in a matinee match-up that started at 1:00 p.m. The loss dropped Drexel to 5-3 on the season while Stanford improved to 3-0.
In a highly anticipated match, Drexel's Steve Mytych (Wyoming, Pa./Northampton) dropped a tough meeting with No. 4 Tanner Gardner. The senior improved to 21-1 with an 8-0 major decision victory over the two-time NCAA qualifier. The Dragons rebounded at 133 pounds as Bill Martin (Avon Grove, Pa./Landenberg) fought back from a 3-2 deficit with a third-period reversal and a takedown to earn a 6-3 victory. Morgan Remillard (Peru, N.Y./Peru) earned Drexel its first match lead as he recovered from a first-period takedown to defeat Max Rosefigura. The junior escaped with 41 seconds remaining in the second period then earned a takedown just seconds later to take a 4-2 lead into the third period. Remillard started the final period on top but was quickly reversed by Rosefigura as the score deadlocked at 4-4. Remillard earned an escape and withstood Rosefigura the rest of the way to earn a 5-4 victory.
Stanford won by major decision at 149 pounds to reclaim the match lead, 8-6. In a rematch of the seventh-place match at the NCAA Championships last season, All-Americans Ryan Hluschak (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) and Josh Zupancic faced-off. Neither wrestler was able to earn a takedown in regulation with each earning a reversal as the match headed to overtime with the score, 1-1. In overtime, each wrestler again earned a reversal before Zupancic was able to earn the only takedown of the match to earn the victory. Last season's match also ended in an overtime victory for Zupancic.
Drexel bounced back at 165 pounds as Billy Haydt (Bath, Pa./Northampton) earned a 6-3 win and Scott Hunter (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) used a takedown and three near-fall points just seconds into the 174-pound match to defeat Luke Feist, 9-6. The pair of wins put the Dragons ahead, 12-11, before Stanford reeled off four straight victories to claim the match.
In their next match, the Dragons will host Purdue on Friday, Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m. at North Penn High School
