Podgurski Wins 200 Free, Madkour Breaks Two School Marks at Terrapin Cup Invitational

College Park, Md. – Craig Podgurski continued his impressive season as he won the 200 free at the Terrapin Cup Invitational while fellow sophomore Sherif Madkour broke Drexel records in the 100 and 200 breast. The Dragons took fifth place among seven teams competing as Drexel topped Villanova and Mary Washington University while placing behind N.C. State, Maryland, Connecticut and William & Mary.
Podgurski took the 200 free final by 0.21 seconds over Maryland's Brian Honore when the sophomore touched the wall at 1:39.87. Podgurski's preliminary time of 1:41.15 was just fourth best among the eight who qualified for the final, but the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year turned it on in the championship final to top Honore who had the top qualifying time at 1:40.37. Podgurski also captured sixth place in the 500 free with a time of 4:36.65.
Sherif Madkour placed fifth in the 200 breast with a time of 2:03.78 and took 10th in the 200 IM after touching the wall at 1:54.49. He also scored points when he captured seventh in the 100 breast final with a time of 57.35. His time of 2:03.78 in the 200 breast broke the record of Hank Alexander of 2:04.61 set in 1992. His 100 breast time shaved 0.12 seconds off of Gergely Nagy's mark set in 2004.
Adrian Sabovici took sixth in the 1650 free as he touched the wall in 16:15.71 as he bested all entrants from conference-foe William & Mary as well as city rival, Villanova.
In the 100 fly, Armagan Yavuz earned the Dragons' 11 team points with an eighth-place finish in 50.73 while Mert Karsiyakalilar won the consolation final and ninth place with a time of 50.00. In the 200 fly, Yavuz earned the Dragons 13 team points with a sixth-place finish in the 200 fly final when he touched the wall at 1:51.67. Karsiyakalilar placed 11th in the event when he recorded a time of 1:51.70 in the consolation final. Cem Karali earned the Dragons four points with a 13th-place finish in the 200 back with finals time of 1:54.81. Tannenbaum took 14th in the 50 free with a time of 21.47.
In the 1-meter dive, the Dragons placed a pair of divers in the top five as Ian Jevnick scored 301.10 in the final to take third while senior Jake Roberson captured fifth with a score of 249.50. On the 3-meter board, Jevnick took second place while Roberson finished fourth.
In relay action, the foursome of Karali, Tannenbaum, Podgurski and Matt Fenn placed fifth in the 400 free relay. The time of 3:06.79 gave the Dragons 28 team points. In the 200 free relay, Fenn, Tannenbaum, Karali, and Karsiyakalilar took sixth with a time of 1:25.66
In the 200 medley relay, Karali, Madkour, Karsiyakalilar and Tannenbaum took fifth with a time of 1:35.73. In the 400 medley relay the foursome of Michael Keisling, Sabovici, Yavuz and Fenn took fifth among the designated 'A' Teams from each participating school.
