Philadelphia – Drexel wrestling dropped a 26-12 decision to Lehigh in the Dragons' final home dual meet of the season. Prior to the match, seniors Bill Martin (Avon Grove, Pa./Landenberg), Morgan Remillard (Peru, N.Y./Peru), and Ryan Hluschak (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) were honored as part of Senior Day festivities. The Mountain Hawks won seven of the 10 bouts as they improved to 12-13 while the Dragons dipped to 10-15 on the season.
Drexel's Steve Mytych opened the match showing the form that has earned him 13 major decision victories this season. As the 125-pounder seemed to be heading toward his 14th, Mytych took a third-period takedown and turned into his second win by fall of the season with just 15 seconds remaining in the third period. Lehigh won the 141- and 149-pound matches and, along with a forfeit by Drexel at 133 pounds, led 13-6.
At 157 pounds, Hluschak made his final appearance at the Daskalakis Athletic Center memorable as he fought back from a 5-1 deficit by earning a late second-period reversal over Dave Nakasone. Hluschak rode Nakasone out to end the period then escaped immediately after the third period started. Midway through the period, Nakasone was called for stalling for the second time in the match and one point was awarded to Hluschak tying the match at 5-5. No other points were earned in the period as the match headed to sudden victory. Hluschak earned a takedown just seconds into the match to pick up his 29th victory of the season. Hluschak, Drexel's all-time leader in wins, was given a rousing ovation from the crowd following the match.
Lehigh rebounded at 165 and 174 pounds with wins by decision before Dave Woodall (Dupont, Pa./Pittston Area) pulled out an 8-5 victory at 184 pounds over Manuel Schubert to edge Drexel closer to the Mountain Hawks at 19-12. Lehigh clinched the match with a win by major decision at 197 pounds and went on to take the heavyweight bout.
Drexel will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships starting March 7 at Hempstead, N.Y.
