Bethlehem, Pa. – Drexel stifled a late comeback by a tough Lehigh team in the closing minutes of a non-conference women's lacrosse game to defeat the Mountain Hawks, 14-13. Jessica Bill (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) scored four goals on four shots while Becca Drylie-Perkins (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) contributed three goals and two assists for the Dragons. The win moved Drexel to 6-1 on the season while Lehigh fell to 5-2.
Bill scored her fourth goal of the game with 17:02 remaining in the second half to give the Dragons a 14-9 lead. Lehigh responded with four unanswered goals, three on free-position shots, over the next 13 minutes to bring the Mountain Hawks to within one, 14-13. The Dragons' defense stiffened from there as Lehigh's comeback attempt came up short when Rachael Behrndt (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) relieved Lauren LaBella (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) in goal for Drexel and made two saves while not allowing a goal.
The game opened with Lehigh scoring two of the game's first three goals before a five-goal Drexel run that started with Bill's first goal of the game gave the Dragons a lead they would not relinquish. With 3:07 remaining in the opening period, Meagan Tenety scored to end the Drexel run but just 23 second later Katie Lawson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) took a Katie Bradley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) pass and scored to give Drexel an 7-3 advantage. With just 28 second left in the first half Drylie-Perkins notched her third goal to send the Dragons to halftime with an 8-3 lead.
After the break, Inneke Carmola scored for the Mountain Hawks with 27:54 remaining but Bill and Sarah Carter (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) scored consecutive goals to increase the Drexel lead to 10-4. The home team responded with three goals in 69 seconds, including two from Lauren Dykstra. Kaitlin Keegan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and Bradley scored to give Drexel a 12-7 edge. Inneke Carmola scored with 19:29 remaining as the two teams then exchanged goals until Bill's final goal gave Drexel a 14-9 lead.
LaBella made eight saves in the cage for Drexel while Behrndt had two in relief. Lehigh's Kelsy Ferris stopped 14 shots. For the game, Drexel outshot Lehigh, 31-26, and held a 15-14 edge in draw controls. Gwenna Johnson (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) corralled a game-high eight groundballs, the most for a Drexel player this season. Sam Berger (Palmyra, N.J./Holy Cross) had an outstanding all-around game contributing six groundballs, three caused turnovers and four draw controls. Bradley added four draw controls and four groundballs to her two goals and one assist.
The Dragons will travel to Wagner on Saturday, March 15 for a non-conference game at noon.
