Philadelphia, Pa. – Ashely Botelho went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Sandi Wambold smacked a two-run homer in the Dragons' four-run third inning to give Drexel (16-9, 5-1) a 7-0 victory over George Mason (8-21, 2-4) in the final game of the weekend series. Katrina Gaudier and Ellen Boundy combined for the shutout victory, improving Drexel's record to 5-1 in conference play.
After splitting with the Patriots on Saturday, Drexel wasted no time in getting to starter Becky Anderson. The Dragons scored two runs on four straight line-drive hits. Hastings, who had four hits in the nightcap yesterday, roped a double to centerfield. Botelho followed with a double to the fence in left field on the very next pitch, giving the Dragons a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Drexel broke open the game in the third inning on a two-run shot by Wambold that highlighted a four-run inning. Hastings led off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single by Botelho that was bobbled by the left fielder. Botelho was chased home on Wambold's homer to left field. Third baseman Kelly Downes placed a double just inside the right field line and she came home with the fourth run on an infield single by the speedy centerfielder Lisa Williams to make it a 6-0 game.
Botelho gave the Dragons another run in the fourth inning. Gaudier took advantage of a fielding error in right field to take two extra bases on a single. Botelho's RBI single gave Drexel a commanding 7-0 lead.
Boundy relieved Gaudier in the sixth inning and closed out the game, allowing just two hits and striking out three. The Patriots loaded the bases against her in the bottom of the seventh after she had struck out two batters. But the freshman was unshaken as she induced a fly ball to centerfield for the final out.
Gaudier let up just one hit in five innings of work for her team-leading ninth victory of the season. She walked three batters and struckout three.
The Dragons are back in action on Wednesday, April 2 when they travel to play St. Peter's in Jersey City, N.J.
