Women's Varsity Eight Earns Third Place in Grand Final at San Diego Crew Classic

San Diego, Calif. - Drexel women's varsity eight earned third place in the Women's Open Division at the 2008 San Diego Crew Classic. The Dragons placed second in their preliminary heat behind UCLA but ahead of boats from St. Mary's College and California - Santa Barbara. In the grand final, Drexel took third place after first-place finisher UCLA and second-place USC.

Drexel was five seconds behind second-place St. Mary's before overtaking the boat and defeating St. Mary's by nearly two seconds. Drexel's time of 7:25.66 was behind only UCLA's 7:08.26 time. St. Mary's finished at 7:27.54 while California - Santa Barbara was clocked at 8:16.03.

In the grand final, Drexel got off to a slow start as the Dragons were fifth after 500 meters of the two kilometer race. The Dragons wasted little time closing in, as at the halfway mark Drexel held third-place by over one second though still nearly six seconds behind second-place USC. The rest of the way Drexel would not make up ground on powerhouses UCLA and USC but the Dragons pulled away from the rest of the pack cemented their third place finish. Drexel finished at 7:18.41 behind UCLA's time of 7:07.77 and USC's 7:12.10. Santa Clara clocked a 7:30.50 with California - Irvine placing fifth.
