Philadelphia – Saint Joseph's Amanda Morrell scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with just over 18 minutes to play as the Hawks (5-2) defeated Drexel (5-3) at Vidas Field on Sunday afternoon.
Morrell took a nice pass from Maggie Lupinski right off the tap and broke in alone on the left side. Her shot beat Drexel goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond to the far side to give the Hawks the lead. The goal came just 11 seconds after Drexel had tied the contest at 1-1. The Dragons' Jenna Lindsay was taken down in the box and Drexel was awarded a penalty kick. Aleka Yiantsos took the kick for the Dragons and evened the score. It was the fifth goal of the year for Yiantsos and on the play, she tied the school record with her 18th career goal. Yiantsos is tied with former teammate Katie Kane.
Lauren Sutcliffe got the Hawks on the board with just under 15 minutes left in the first half. The ball was loose as Drexel tried to clear from a crowd in front of the net. Sutcliffe picked off the clearing attempt at the top of the box and blasted a shot towards the upper left corner. Kaitlin Bond got a hand on the ball, but it deflected off of the cross bar and into the net. Drexel's best chance of the half came early when Yiantsos broke in on the right side midway through the first half and rifled a shot that was headed for the upper left corner. Saint Joseph's keeper Megan Bastianelli got a hand on the ball and then it deflected off the cross bar and went over the net. It was one of seven saves in the game for Bastianelli.
Drexel outshot the Hawks, 18-11 and had three cornerkicks, to just one for Saint Joseph's. Bond came up with two saves as the Dragons had their two game winning streak stopped.
The Dragons begin Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday night in Boston. The Dragons visit Northeastern in a match that begins at 6 p.m. Drexel will have a quick turnaround as they return home to face Hofstra on Sunday afternoon.
