Philadelphia - Drexel wrestling dropped Boston University, 22-11, in a Colonial Athletic Association match at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in the opening of Homecoming Weekend Festivities on campus. The Dragons took seven of the 10 matches with Matt Dugan and Justin Wieller earning a bonus point each for a major decision win. The win evened Drexel conference record at 2-2 while improving to 6-12-1 overall. Boston dipped to 3-4-1 on the season.
The match began at 157 pounds as Billy Haydt used three first-period takedowns to defeat Carlo Ferrandino, 8-7. Scott Hunter picked up the Dragons' second straight one-point victory as he picked up a late takedown to defeat C.J. Inglin, 8-7. Boston got on the board with a wild 18-11 win at 174 pounds. Hunter Meys appeared to be cruising to a major decision victory as he led 9-2 after the first period. Woodall came storming back in the second with a takedown followed by a three-point near fall. One last takedown at the end of the period made the score 14-9 entering the third period. Meys came back in the third period with a near fall to eventually win, 18-11. At 184 pounds, Justin Wieller claimed an impressive 8-0 shutout triumph over Dan Kennedy.
At 197 pounds, 12th-ranked Jon Oplinger was dealt a stunning defeat at the hands of John Hall. The Boston wrestler made the most of a first-period takedown by earning close to two minutes of riding time. Oplinger stormed back with a pair of takedowns in the second period. Hall's three second-period escapes left the score, 5-4 entering the third. Oplinger chose to open the period in neutral position but Hall refused to be taken down. Oplinger was awarded one point for the second stalling call on Hall as the score became knotted at 5-5. With no other scoring and Hall holding on to a riding time advantage, the Boston wrestler scored the 6-5 upset. It was the first time Oplinger suffered a defeat since November.
Drexel rebounded to take the 285-pound match as Kyle Frey needed overtime to dispatch Jim Connors, 10-8. At 125 pounds, Michael Gomez piled up five takedowns, including three in the first period to defeat Ryan Dowd, 11-7. At 133 pounds, Frank Cimato pulled out a 4-0 victory after a scoreless opening two periods. Cimato rode Boston's Alex Cournoyer out in the second period and managed to escape in the third period. Cimato earned a takedown to seal the victory.
Freshman Matt Dugan showed how dangerous he can be on top as he took a 4-3 deficit after one period and racked up four three-point near falls over the next two periods to win, 17-4. Dugan began the final two periods in the top position and never relinquished control en route to the major decision win. Boston's Mike Roberts ended the dual with a win by technical fall over Robert Robinson.
The Dragons will continue conference action next weekend as Hofstra visits the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Jan. 31 at 4:00 p.m.
