Philadelphia - Drexel senior Jon Oplinger earned a 16-8 major decision victory over Hofstra's Anthony Tortora to become the Dragons' ninth wrestler to reach 100 career wins. Oplinger's triumph was one of three on the day for Drexel as No. 21 Hofstra prevailed, 30-10. Robert Robinson and Kyle Frey also picked up wins against the defending conference team champions.
Hofstra reeled off wins in the first three matches of the day before Robinson halted the run with a 9-5 decision over Jess Rotella. The freshman racked up three takedowns in the first period and added another in the second period to earn the win. The Pride rebounded to win the next four matches to put the dual out of reach for the Dragons. Oplinger then posted his milestone victory as the 197-pounder opened the match with three first-period takedowns before another trio of takedowns in the second period en route to the 16-8 win. Frey capped the match with a hard-fought 5-1 victory over Jordan Enck. Frey led 2-0 after two periods after picking up a point for an escape and a stalling call on Enck. The Hofstra heavyweight escaped to halve the deficit in the third period and seemed poised to earn a takedown on Frey but was unable to score as Frey sealed the match with a takedown just before the buzzer.
For Drexel's next match, the Dragons will renew their rivalry with Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J. on Feb. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
