Coman Shines in Tri-Meet with Rhode Island and UConn

Kingston, R.I. - Maria Coman picked up three first-place finishes against Rhode Island and one against UConn as the Drexel women's swimming & diving team competed in a tri-meet on the campus of Rhode Island. The Dragons lost to the host, 166-108, and to UConn, 174-95. Kaitlin Slowey and Jessica Csakai each earned a first-place finish against Rhode Island while Kate Hynes swept the diving action.
Coman opened her big day with a time of 1:00.02 in the 100 back as she finished only behind UConn's Erin McLaughlin who clocked a 59.58. She added another second-place in the 200 back as she was timed at 2:10.01 to best all Rhode Island entrants and all but one Husky. She capped her day by defeating all swimmers in the 200 IM by more than four seconds as she recorded a time of 2:15.48.
Slowey defeated all Rhode Island swimmers in the 200 fly with a time of 2:16.20. Csakai also defeated all Rams' entries in the 500 free. Her time of 5:14.69 was behind only UConn's Molly McGroarty. The Drexel highlight of the day in relay action came from the 400 free relay team of Devina Tyagi, Meg Smith, Malin Wiberg and Csakai. The group's time of 3:47.05 defeated UConn and came in second place to Rhode Island.
Hynes kept her unbeaten streak intact despite the strong competition from UConn divers. The senior posted two 300-plus scores on the day. Her 303.75 total on the 1-meter board withstood Liza Marrianni's charge that gave the UConn diver a score of 259.10 in the event. On the 3-meter board, Hynes' totaled 311.10 which topped Marrianni's score of 272.50 among others.
For their next meet, the Dragons will host Howard on Jan. 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
