Towson, Md. – Gerald Colds came off the bench to score 14 points as Drexel defeated Towson, 60-53, for its seventh straight win. The Dragons once again played well on the defensive end for most of the game and held on to improve to 12-8 overall and 8-3 in the CAA. Towson fell to 8-15 and 3-8 in the CAA.
Drexel went up by 11 when Evan Neisler scored on a dunk and was fouled. He made the free throw to give Drexel a 47-36 lead with 7:31 to play. Towson chipped away at the lead over the next few minutes and finally cut it to four when Rocky Coleman's short jumper made it 57-53 with just 39 seconds to play. After a Dragon turnover, Towson's Josh Thornton missed a three-pointer and Tramayne Hawthorne came up with the rebound. He was immediately fouled and made one of two from the line to put the game out of reach.
The Dragons trailed for the first 10 minutes of the game, but went on a 9-0 run to take the lead. Gerald Colds made consecutive three-pointers and Scott Rodgers added another to make it a 25-18 Drexel lead. Rodgers had 11 points in the first half for Drexel, who went to intermission ahead, 32-24.
Drexel's defense was stingy once again, limiting the Tigers to just 34 percent shooting in the game. The Tigers made just one of their 10 three-point attempts. Drexel shot 42 percent and converted 73 percent of their free throws in the second half (16-for-22) after struggling in the early going. Colds had a pair of three-pointers and was 5-for-7 from the floor. Scott Rodgers added 12 points, while Evan Neisler chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds.
Junior Hairston led the Tigers with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Tigers were able to stay in the game due to their work on the offensive boards. Towson grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Dragons 40-33.
The Dragons finish their brief two-game road trip with a game at Delaware on Wednesday night. The game can be seen live at 8 p.m. on the Comcast Network.
