Knoxville, Tenn. - Drexel senior Kate Hynes finished first in qualifying in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions en route to the championship on the 3-meter board and a third-place on the 1-meter board at the Tennessee Diving Invitational. The meet featured some of the nation's top divers from several Southeastern Conference schools such as Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee in addition to other national powers in women's diving.
Hynes cruised in the qualifying phase of both events as she won the 3-meter qualifying by more than 18 points as she posted a 329.90 while winning on the 1-meter board with a total of 299.35. In the 1-meter final, Hynes finished with a score of 280.00 to claim third place. On the 3-meter board, Hynes took the event as she edged Kara Salamone of the University of Florida (the winner of the 1-meter competition) by 0.50 points. Hynes' score of 316.55 topped Salamone's 316.05 as she earned one of the most prestigious collegiate diving titles of the regular season.
Last season, at the Georgia Diving Invitational, Hynes captured second place in both events. This season, the meet was relocated to the University of Tennessee with the same top class of divers participating. The title was one of the few, Hynes had not conquered in her illustrious Drexel career. Last season, Hynes was undefeated on both boards in dual meets while also winning the NCAA Diving Zone Regional on the 1- and 3-meter boards. She also pocketed her third straight conference championships on both boards. Hynes went on to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors at the NCAA Championships on the 3-meter board.
