Women's Swimming Opens Season with Narrow Defeat at Shippensburg

Shippensburg, Pa. - The Drexel women's swimming team opened the 2009-10 season with a 106-93 defeat at the hands of host Shippensburg in a dual meet. The Dragons picked up first and second place finishes in the 200 fly and the 200 breast while Drexel's 400 free relay team took first place. Freshmen Kelly Scheirer and Lauren Faykes each had a hand in a first-place finish in their collegiate debuts.
Scheirer won the 200 fly with a time of 2:23.46 to earn the Dragons nine team points. Finishing just behind Scheirer was sophomore Victoria Mayer at 2:25.17. A pair of sophomores led the 200 breast sweep of the top two places at the meet. Malin Wiberg earned nine more points for the visitors as she claimed first place in the 200 breast after touching at 2:31.55. Classmate Amanda Brown took second and four team points with her time of 2:33.85.
The Dragons capped the day on a high note with a victory in the 400 free relay. Senior Jessica Csakai led teammates Devina Tyagi, Faykes and Maria Coman to victory and 11 team points with their time of 3:43.79.
The Drexel women's swimming team will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 21 as the Dragons travel to Chester, Pa. to take on Widener. The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m.
