Men's and Women's Swimming Look for First Victory at Widener

Chester, Pa. - The Drexel men's and women's swimming team will travel to nearby Chester, Pa. to take on Widener in a non-conference dual meet on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 6:00 p.m. The Dragons are coming off of narrow defeats in the teams' season-opener at the hands of Shippensburg as the men dropped a 108-97 decision while the women fell 106-93.
The men's squad was led in its first meet by T.J. Southmayd who was impressive in his Drexel debut winning the 200 IM and the 200 back while helping the 400 free relay team claim first place. The 200 back event was dominated by the Dragons as freshman Dan Zalkind posted a time of 2:02.33 to finish behind only Southmayd's winning time of 2:00.09. Another Drexel newcomer finished in third place as Cole Gindhart clocked a 2:03.61.
The women had strong showings from several swimmers in their opening meet and will look to build on their momentum. Kelly Scheirer won the 200 fly with a time of 2:23.46 to while sophomore Victoria Mayer took second place. A pair of sophomores led the 200 breast sweep of the top two places at the meet. Malin Wiberg claimed first place in the 200 breast after touching at 2:31.55 while Amanda Brown took second and four team points with her time of 2:33.85.
