Towson Rallies to Defeat Women's Soccer in OT, 4-3
10/19/2009 6:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Drexel rallied from a two-goal deficit to take the lead, but Towson scored a late goal and another early in overtime to defeat the Dragons, 4-3. The match was originally scheduled for Sunday but was postponed due to weather.
The Tigers raced out to an early 2-0 lead after goals by Erica Marshall and Cheyenne Skidmore. Drexel started its rally in the 33rd minute. Katie Duncan fired a shot that hit the crossbar, and Jenna Lindsay was there to put home the rebound for her fourth goal of the season. The teams went to intermission with the Tigers ahead, 2-1.
Early in the second half, the Dragons scored a pair of goals in a span of less than four minutes. Freshman Elizabeth Matta started the rally when she scored her third goal of the year after putting home a cross from Carly Snyder. The Dragons took the lead in the 65th minute when Katie Duncan scored on a free kick. It was her first collegiate goal. The 3-2 lead stood until the final three minutes, when Towson tied it when a Drexel defender headed the ball into the Dragon net. Towson capitalized on the momentum just three and a half minutes into overtime when Marshall scored the golden goal.
Drexel outshot the Tigers, 14-13, but Towson keeper Courtney Lupinek made six saves. Nicole Sinclair had three saves for the Dragons. Each team recorded five corner kicks. The Dragons return home for a pair of matches this weekend. Drexel hosts UNCW on Friday night and face Georgia State on Senior Day on Sunday at noon.
