Box Score
Philadelphia – Kelly Dodd headed in a long serve off the foot of Brittany Croce with 32 seconds left in the first overtime to give UNC Wilmington (9-7-1, 5-3-1 CAA) a 2-1 win over Drexel (3-12-1, 1-7-1 CAA) on Senior Night at Vidas Field. The Dragons' battled back from a 1-0 deficit to score with just over a minute left and send the match into overtime. But the Seahawks found their golden goal in the waning seconds to give Drexel its fourth overtime loss of the season. Jenna Lindsay scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season and terrorized the UNCW defense throughout the match.
The contest was an evenly matched affair with Drexel holding a slight 15-14 edge in shots and UNC Wilmington earning four corners to Drexel's three. The Dragons seemed to hold an advantage in scoring opportunities in both halves and forced the Seahawks' keeper Caitlin Hunter to make seven saves in net. Drexel's Nicole Sinclair made five stops between the pipes for the Dragons.
Drexel put together a number of scoring chances in the first half with Jenna Lindsay leading the charge. With under 15 minutes left in the half, the sophomore striker made a strong turn to possess the ball in the Dragons' offensive half and dribbled her way into the goal box before being narrowly clipped by the defender on her shot. Drexel outcornered the Seahawks 2-1 but did not capitalize on either chance. Both teams took five shots in the half but not a ball found net in the first 45 minutes.
With 32 minutes left in the second half, UNC Wilmington had its best scoring chance of the match. The Seahawks drew a foul beyond midfield and the resultant free kick was launched into the box from straight on. The ball, carrying more than 60 yards, bounced once in front of keeper Nicole Sinclair who leapt to deflect it off the crossbar. The ricochet came back down where Sinclair smothered it before being fouled by Seahawk attackers.
UNC Wilmington broke the scoreless draw in the 84th minute on a build up in the box. The Seahawks worked three passes across the 18-yard box and the Dragons nearly dispatched the threat. But when Kristal Tucker lifted a pass from the center of the box to the right side, UNCW's Jenna Evans was the first player to it and placed a shot in the upper left side to give her team a 1-0 lead with under five minutes remaining.
Drexel played furiously to get an equalizer in the waning minutes and the Dragons were rewarded with just over a minute left in the contest. Lindsay, who had threatened the Seahawks twice before in the half, muscled her way through a patch of defenders just inside the 18-yard box and maintained possession before finding an opening and blasting a shot past the keeper on the left side. The goal knotted up the match, sending a soggy but enthusiastic crowd of more than 300 fans into a frenzy and the match into overtime.
But the goal would only stave off defeat for another nine and a half minutes as the Seahawks would break through at the end of overtime and hand the Dragons another heartbreaking extra-period loss.
Seniors Caley Burke, Jacklyn Barrett, Carly Snyder and Alicia Julianti were honored before the match as part of Senior Night proceedings.
Drexel will look to bounce back on Sunday when the Dragons host the Georgia State Panthers at noon on Vidas Field.
