Cairone's Hat Trick Leads No. 11 Drexel Past Northeastern, 5-1

Philadelphia - Junior Jen Cairone scored three second-half goals as No. 11 Drexel dropped Northeastern, 5-1. Christina Mastropaolo recorded her sixth straight game-winning goal while Susan Ciufo also chipped in with a score. The win moved Drexel to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association while Northeastern dipped to 9-8 and 3-3 in the CAA.
Mastropaolo got the Dragons on the board after deflecting a deflection of a penalty corner. Sofia Sanguinetti fired a shot toward the cage that found the stick of Kim Tunell in front. The ball popped into the air where Mastropaolo slapped the ball out of the air and into the cage. Just three minutes later, Ciufo picked up a loose ball in front and pushed a shot from the left side into the right corner of the cage to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Cairone put the contest out of reach with three straight goals. Her first came after deflecting a Ciufo offering on a penalty corner. She picked up her second after one-timing a Mastropaolo crossing pass into the cage. Her third came when a Jennifer Bolger shot was saved on a penalty corner and she cleaned up the rebound by lifting the ball into the cage. Her three goals came in a span of just 11:13. Northeastern wrapped the scoring with a goal with just 83 seconds remaining.
Drexel outshot the Huskies, 22-3, and held a 10-2 edge in penalty corners. The victory set the stage for Drexel to win the conference title outright with victories in its final two games next weekend at Towson and Delaware.
