Box Score
Philadelphia – Ernesto Marquez scored twice to lead George Mason in a 3-1 win over Drexel on Tuesday in another soggy soccer match at Vidas Field. Drexel battled as hard as it has all season and went into the half with a 1-1 tie after falling behind early. Rookie Taylor Brophy scored his first career goal on an assist by classmate Skylar Olson, which was Olson's first career point. The loss dropped Drexel to 5-9-1 overall and 1-6-1 in CAA play. Mason improved to 10-5-1 (5-3-1 CAA).
Despite playing without a number of regular contributors in the lineup due to a variety of circumstances, the Dragons ground out an even battle with the Patriots through much of the match. Mason edged Drexel 16-15 in shots and 6-2 in corners, but the contest was much closer than the 3-1 score indicated. Drexel keeper Tres Heffron made three stops in net and the Patriot's Sean Kelley saved one and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of play.
The Patriots broke a 1-1 tie in the first five minutes of the second half on a goal by Victor Freeman. The junior forward fought off his defender Jon Volpatti while carrying the ball in the box. He eased off a shot that rolled past keeper Tres Heffron on near post to make it a 2-1 Mason lead.
Just minutes later Drexel had a chance to equalize when the Dragons' first corner kick of the match led to keeper Sean Kelley diving to punch out a header and falling to the ground. A scrum of Patriots impeded a clear shot by the Dragons on the untended goal, with the final result, a shot by Justin Johnson that was blocked.
Mason added an insurance goal in the final 40 seconds when the Dragons packed the offensive zone for a free kick at midfield. When the ensuing drive was cleared back to the stripe, a two-on-one breakaway resulted. Victor Freeman carried the ball into the goal box and dropped a pass off to Ernesto Marquez who tapped home his second goal of the match to make it 3-1.
George Mason wasted no time in showing their desperation to win the match, scoring just under two minutes into the proceeding on a set piece from 18 yards out. Ernesto Marquez lined up the free kick, positioned just outside the right corner of the goal box and curved it into the near post side of the net.
The Dragons, fielding a roster depleted by a number of ailments, injuries and infractions, failed to go quietly into the night of West Philadelphia, however. Freshmen Skylar Olson and Taylor Brophy teamed up to even the match at a goal apiece in the 17th minute. Olson sprinted down the ball on a break, collecting it just before it reached the right sideline. He angled his run and lifted a cross to the far post from 35 yards out. Brophy sprinted from the left side of the box and dove to connect with the header from point-blank range, and blast it past the goalie. The goal snapped a scoreless streak of more than 250 minutes for the Dragons.
Mason outshot Drexel 10-7 in the first half, but the Dragons worked hard to develop quality scoring chances in the period. Keeper Tres Heffron played aggressively in goal to dispatch a pair of Mason scoring opportunities after allowing the first goal.
The Dragons take to the road this weekend for a match against Old Dominion on Saturday before playing a make-up game against UNC Wilmington on Monday.
