Philadelphia - Drexel men's soccer heads south this weekend for a meeting with CAA rival Georgia State on Saturday, Oct. 10. The Dragons (5-4-0, 1-1 CAA) are hoping to bounce back after a tough 2-1 loss at Delaware on Wednesday night. Opening kick is set for 1:00 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga. Teams: Drexel (5-4-0, 1-1-0) vs. Georgia State (2-4-1, 0-3-0)
Venue: Pantherville Athletic Complex, Dekalb County, Ga.
All-Time Series: Drexel leads 3-1-0
Last Meeting: In their short history as league foes, Drexel holds a slight edge in the all-time series. In their last meeting Drexel won a thrilling 2-1 match in overtime. Bryan Ruff headed home the golden goal off a corner kick from Anthony Bafile with two seconds remaining in the first extra period. Leland Raum scored the Dragons' first goal early in the match. Georgia's Dathan Knott tied the contest with 16 minutes left in regulation, but the Panthers would fall in overtime.
Entering the Match: Drexel fell to the Delaware Blue Hens 2-1. During a scoreless first half with gusting winds, neither team was able to generate an opportunity on net. Delaware's Darren Christie put his team on the board early in the second half, using his speed to open a look on the left side and score under a diving Alex Reber. Christie finished another goal that was flicked on by Courtney Hewitt off of a Blue Hen throw in. Not giving up, the Dragons rallied and outshot Delaware 8-6 in the second. Drexel's loan goal came from a free kick taken by senior midfielder Fabio Assumpcao. Assumpcao has proven very dangerous when given a chance within 30 yards and he did not dissappoint. Delaware's Darren O'Connor was ejected from the match in the 74th minute following his second yellow card infraction. O'Connor's card set up the free kick for Drexel and the score by Assumpcao. In the final minutes of the match Drexel was given multiple corner kicks and shots on goal that they were unable to convert. Drexel goalie Alex Reber had one save in the match.
Players to Watch: Freshman Nathan Page has been putting in quality work at midfield for the Dragons this season. The rookie was called into a starting role when senior Anthony Bafile was sidelined with an injury three matches into the season. Page most recently pushed the Dragons to victory over Towson in a match that saw no halt in action from the first minute on. After 10 goals scored between the two teams, Page deposited the golden goal in the second over time period, the first of his career, to give Drexel a 1-0 conference start.
Struggling with weather issues, Georgia State has had two matches cancelled already this season. In the last four contests, one has been cancelled while the other three have left the Panthers scoreless. The Panthers are heavy on freshman and sophomores so when the opportunity arises, Georgia State looks toward rookie Yasser Majluf to finish. Majluf leads the team with two goals this season.
Up Next: After they close up their two game road swing, the Dragons will be back at home on Vidas Field for their next match against Hofstra on Wednesday Oct. 14 at 4:00 p.m.
