Second-Half Surge Pushes Georgia State Past Dragons 3-1

Atlanta, Ga. - Georgia State (3-4-1, 1-3 CAA) scored twice in the second half to break a 1-1 stalemate through the first 45 minutes and claim a 3-1 victory over Drexel (5-5, 1-2 CAA). Senior midfielder Fabio Assumpcao scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season for the Dragons.
Drexel outshot Georgia State 9-8 in the match and 5-2 in the first half. The Dragons also had four corner kick opportunities to the Panthers' one corner in the first half, but failed to score.
The Panthers took an early lead in the19th minute off a blast by Juan Giraldo. Assumpcao equalized just before halftime off a set up from Andrew Goldberg on a set piece. Assumpcao's goal, his seventh of the season, is the most scored by a Dragon since Dominick Balsamo scored seven in 2003.
Georgia State pulled ahead in the 52nd minute when Eric Lawrence placed a pass into the box for Caleb Kernan who one-touched a shot into the net to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
Gordon Gimel added an insurance goal in the 75 minute on a blast from just outside the 18-yard box to put Georgia State on top 3-1.
Senior keeper Alex Reber made one save in net for the Dragons before being pulled in the final seven minutes. Vincent Foermer stopped one shot and let in one goal in 90 minutes between the pipes for Georgia State.
The Dragons will return to Vidas Field on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 4:00 p.m.
