Box Score
Philadelphia – Senior Cole Feffer scored his first goal of the season for the Dragons (5-6, 1-3 CAA), but a 1-0 Drexel lead did not hold up as Hofstra (6-5, 4-1) scored four unanswered goals to claim a 4-1 victory over Drexel. Rob Youhill scored twice and assisted on a third goal as the Pride rolled to its fourth conference win of the season and Drexel dropped its first CAA match at home on the year.
Hofstra outshot the Dragons 18-10 overall and 13-8 in the second half. The most telling stat of the contest was an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks for the Pride, including a 8-0 swing in the second period. Tres Heffron, in his second start of the season, made five saves. Greg Cumpstone made five stops for his sixth win of the season in goal for Hofstra.
The teams dueled to a scoreless first half, despite an abundance of scoring opportunities for both squads. Drexel generated the majority of its chances as the result of pressuring the Pride's defenders and goalie in the defensive backfield. The Pride's scoring looks came from its speedy wings working the ball up the field and spinning crosses into the box. Heffron was tested several of times in the period and came up with two saves to keep his opponents off the scoreboard.
Feffer put the Dragons on the board early in the second half on a goal that was set up by a nice run by Cory Rohlfsen. The junior defender gained possession of the ball near midfield and continued his run, with some help from the Drexel midfield, into the Hofstra defensive third. He angled his run toward the center of the field and placed a serve to Cole Feffer on the right side of the goal box. Feffer settled the pass and placed a blast to the upper right side of the net for his first goal of the season.
Hofstra equalized in the 59th minute after a series of chances that included three corner kicks and four shots during the span of two minutes. Finally Rob Youhill placed a corner kick to the far left post where Richard Martinez met it with a header to the middle. Hefron got a hand on it, but it was not enough to keep it out of the net.
The Pride pulled ahead three minutes later when Youhill volleyed a rainbow kick over his own head from 15 yards out with his back to the goal. Hofstra added an insurance tally with 20 minutes left in the match as Johannes Grahn served a ball to the top of the goal box and Steven Erichs chested it down. Erichs' settle shielded the defense and gave Youhill the space he needed to place his second goal of the match and give Hofstra a 3-1 lead.
With the remaining 20 minutes, Drexel did its best to mount a comeback. The Dragons drew three fouls in its offensive zone that all resulted in free kicks curved on goal by the foot of Fabio Assumpcao.
Youhill led a breakaway toward goal with less than eight minutes left in the match that looked to be a sure score. But a charging Heffron pushed away the shot and smothered the rebound bid off the foot of Hofstra's sprinting striker.
The relief was short-lived, however, a the Pride led another scoring attack with just over five minutes left. After nearly clearing the ball in the box, Drexel's defense surrendered possession to Steven Erichs, who took a dribble and beat Heffron on the left side, making it a 4-1 contest.
Substitutes Eric Lynch and Joe Sales both had blasts on goal within 10 yards in the last minute of play, but Cumpstone answered both calls with his fourth and fifth saves of the match.
Drexel returns to Vidas Field this Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. match against Virginia Commonwealth under the lights at Vidas Field.
Drexel 0 1 - 1
Hofstra 0 4 - 4
