Philadelphia - Drexel will be looking to snap a three-match losing skid this weekend when the Dragons welcome the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth to Vidas Field for a 7:00 p.m. match on Saturday night. The Dragons (5-6-0, 1-3 CAA) are in search of their second conference win of the season while the Rams enter the match with an 0-5 record in CAA play.
Teams: Drexel (5-6-0, 2-3-0) vs. Virginia Commonwealth (3-7-1, 0-5-0)
Venue: Vidas Field, Philadelphia, Pa.
All-Time Series: VCU leads 4-3
Last Meeting: Drexel stunned VCU with a 2-0 win at their last meeting in Richmond. Senior Carlos Ruthner and Mike Crosse scored once each for Drexel while senior keeper Cory Robertson held together the back line with two stops in net to record his fourth shutout on the year.
Entering the Game: Drexel dropped its first conference home game to Hofstra by a mark of 4-1. Both teams battled back and forth in the first half with Drexel rookie goalie Tres Heffron making two stops to keep the score sheet clean going into the half. The Dragons got on the board first early in the second half when defender Cory Rohlfsen made a coast to coast run from the back field that resulted in a short service ball to right flank Cole Feffer. Feffer settled the incoming pass and lifted a shot over Hofstra keeper Greg Cumpstone for the 1-0 advantage. Less than ten minutes later, Hofstra's Richard Martinez finished a ball headed back across the goal box by Rob Youhill. Youhill recorded the assist and the next two goals for the Pride making the score 3-1.
In the fleeting minutes of regulation, Hofstra added one more goal off the foot of Steven Ehrichs for a final of 4-1. During the match, Drexel was outshoot 18-10 and out cornered 11-1. Heffron recorded five saves in net during his second career start for Drexel while Cumpstone matched him with five of his own for Hofstra.
Players to Watch: Redshirt senior Mike Crosse continues to provide energy up top for the Dragons. Crosse shares the second spot on the leader board for goals at three, one shy of his career high. Crosse missed out on his junior year due to an early season ending injury. Since his return last year he has recorded a season high four goals and is on his way to topping that mark this season.
Sophomore forward Ramario Blandon leads the Rams this year with six goals on the season. Blandon also leads the CAA in shots at 42 and shots per game averaging 4.20 per match.
Up Next: Drexel travels North midweek to take on the Northeastern Huskies at Parsons Field, Boston, Mass. First kick is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
