Philadelphia - Drexel women's basketball will begin the follow up to its historic 2008-09 season when the Dragons host the Lady Lions of Penn State at the DAC on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. All-America candidate Gabriela Marginean is looking to continue her assault on the school and conference record books as she enters her senior season in University City. The Dragons will be extending a special welcome to members of our armed forces in attendance on Military Appreciation Day at the DAC.
The Lady Lions are coming off an 11-18 season last year and looking for their first winning season under third-year head coach Coquese Washington. The team returns Big 10 First Teamer Tyra Grant at guard and fellow starter Juila Trojele at forward. Penn State defeated Indiana (Pa.) 67-49 in an exhibition game at the Bryce Jordan Center on Nov. 8 as a warm-up for the season.
Drexel returns three starters this season including 2009 CAA Preseason Player of the Year Gabriela Marginean, Preseason All-CAA Second Team shooting guard Jasmina Rosseel and senior forward Jennifer Stjarnstrom. Marginean, a preseason candidate for the John R. Wooden Award, is approaching Drexel's all-time scoring record and needs just 47 more points to break the mark of 1,900 which is held by Michelle Maslowski ('02). Rosseel, who drained a Drexel season-high 90 three-pointers last year, is just six away from tying Bridget Scanlan ('03) for second place on the Dragons' all-time list.
Penn State won the team's two previous meetings, the most recent was a 66-60 victory in Happy Valley on Nov. 25, 2007. The Lady Lions also opened the DAC for the 2006-07 season on Nov. 10, 2006. Penn State won 74-56 on that day. It was the first collegiate game for Gabriela Marginean who scored 12 points and led the team with six rebounds in her debut.
As part of Military Appreciation Day at the DAC all members of the armed forces with a military I.D. will receive two free tickets. Additional tickets are $6 and all youth (ages 12 and under) are free. Members of the Drexel ROTC will present the colors during the national anthem. Throughout the week the Veterans Task Force on campus has been collecting items for care packages to send to service men and women overseas. At halftime of the game, those care packages will be presented to Karen Jennigs of the Military Support Group of New Jersey. The Task Force is collecting donations to help cover the cost of shipping the packages. For more information visit the Task Force's website http://www.drexel.edu/src/veterans.asp.
Admission for all other fans is $5 (children under 12 are free) and free for students with a Drexel I.D.
The contest will be broadcast live on 91.7 FM Drexel's student-run radio station with Pat Delsi and Alex Falk calling the action. It will also be simulcast online at www.drexeldragons.com. Fans can also watch the game via Dragons All-Access or livestats.
