Binghamton, N.Y. - The Drexel men's swimming & diving team lost a dual meet to non-conference opponent Binghamton, 166-134. Sherif Madkour and T.J. Southmayd each swept their strokes as Madkour took the 100 and 200 breast while Southmayd claimed the 100 and 200 back. The loss dropped the Dragons to 4-3 on the season.
After the Bearcats took the opening event, the 200 medley relay, Adrian Sabovici pulled out a thrilling victory in the 1000 free as he and Binghamton's Nolan Slesnick were neck-and-neck throughout the race. Sabovici and Slesnick finished more than 36 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher as the two-man race ended with Sabovici recording a time of 9:52.67 while Slesnick clocked a 9:52.79. The Bearcats recovered to win the 200 free though Drexel's Jesse McGrath finished second with a time of 1:50.38. After Binghamton won the 100 back, Sherif Madkour gave the Dragons' nine team points with a first-place finish in the 100 breast as he touched the wall in 59.74. Senior transfer T.J. Southmayd followed with a victory in the 200 fly with teammate Armagan Yavuz claiming second place. Binghamton struck back with victories in the 50 and 100 free, but Southmayd gave Drexel nine more points as he completed the sweep in the backstroke events with a victory in the 200 with a time of 1:56.46. Madkour also picked up his second victory with a win in the 200 breast at 2:10.76 as he defeated second-place Ryan Terracciano by nearly 12 seconds. In the 500 free, Slesnick got his revenge as he edged Sabovici with a time of 4:47.79 to Sabovici's 4:47.98. Binghamton went on to win the next two events to sew up the victory but the Dragons' closed the meet with an impressive one-two-three finish in the 400 free relay.
In diving action, the big news was the return of Drexel's Ian Jevnick. The junior battled back from an off-season injury to make his debut on the 1-meter board where he won by more than 28 points with a score of 247.50. The 2008 CAA Diver of the Year did not compete in the 3-meter event. Stephen Cal took third on the 3-meter board with a score of 188.70 while teammate Drew McPhillips finished fifth while posting a score of 155.25. Cal also finished third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 206.25.
