Scott Rodgers off balancer runner with a second to play bounced off the rim and William & Mary held on to defeat the Dragons, 48-47. Danny Sumner hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds to play to give the Tribe the lead for good as Drexel concluded the 2008-09 regular season at 15-13 overall and 10-8 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
The Dragons had trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, but went on a 9-0 run to get back in the game. Evan Neisler started the run with a dunk, and Rodgers scored the next seven points. He made a three-pointer, was fouled and converted the free throw. On the next possession Rodgers hit another three-pointer, and Drexel trailed by just one. Drexel took the lead with eight minutes to play, but the game went back and forth after that. The Dragons scored five straight points at one point, and after Tramayne Hawthorne knocked down a three-pointer Drexel led 47-43 with 2:44 to play. That would be the last points the Dragons would score. David Schneider scored on a fast break lay-up to cut the lead to two points, which set up the situation for Sumner's game-winning shot.
Leon Spencer had his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort. He also had three blocks. Rodgers added 11 points and nine rebounds but was just 3-for-16 from the floor. Neisler was also in double figures for the Dragons with 10 points.
Sumner led the Tribe with 13 points and was 3-for-5 from behind the arc. William & Mary held Drexel to just 32.7 percent shooting from the floor. The Tribe held a 21-16 lead at intermission.
Drexel will enter the CAA Tournament as the sixth seed. The Dragons will play their first game on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. against the #11 seed. Their opponent will be determined later tonight. The Dragons will face either Towson University or William & Mary at the Richmond Coliseum.
