Women's Varsity Eight Takes Second in Five Boat Race in Spring Opener

Philadelphia - Drexel welcomed four regional rivals as Saint Joseph's, Delaware, Lehigh and La Salle competed on the Schuylkill River in the Dragons' first competition of the spring season. The varsity eight placed second among the five schools with Saint Joseph's taking first place. Drexel's junior varsity entry took third place of four boats while the novice boat took fourth of six boats, with Delaware entering a pair of boats in the race.
Drexel's varsity eight registered a time of 6:54.5 behind only the Hawks' boat that crossed at 6:48.2. Delaware took a distant third place, more than 13 second after the Dragons' boat finished. The Blue Hens' time of 7:08.2 was faster than Lehigh (7:17.9) and La Salle (7:27.0). Saint Joseph's also won the junior varsity race while Delaware took second. Drexel's time of 7:34.6 did top fourth-place finisher Lehigh by more than five seconds.
Drexel's novice eight was clocked at 8:04.1 after Saint Joseph's won the race with a time of 7:35.9. Delaware took second with Lehigh finishing in third. La Salle placed fifth and Delaware's B boat rounding out the field.
Drexel crew will return to the water on March 28 for the Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
