Philadelphia- Hillary Allen scattered four hits en route to a complete-game victory and Christina Rodriguez belted a solo shot as Drexel defeated Georgia State 5-3 in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Drexel Field. Georgia State won the opener, 6-1. The two teams play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday. More details to follow.
Ashley Botelho and Paige Collings each had run scoring hits as the Dragons (11-7, 1-1) jumped out to an early lead. The Panthers (12-11, 1-1) answered with a run in the third, but Drexel answered with a pair in the bottom of the frame. In the fifth, Rodriguez went deep to make it a 5-1 game. Georgia State scored two runs on a two-run home run in the seventh, but the Dragons held on for the win and earned the split.
In game one, Georgia State broke open a close game with three runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh on its way to a 6-1 win. Kristin Beaver got the Dragons only run on the board with a home run in the fifth inning.
Botelho extended her team-best hitting streak to 16 games with knocks in both contests. The two teams conclude the series on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
