Philadelphia - The Drexel women's crew opened its spring regatta season with a third-place finish in the varsity eight race at the Murphy Cup. A total of 24 schools entered boats in the varsity eight competition and the Dragons impressed with a second-place finish in their heat before taking third in the championship final.
Drexel's varsity eight finished behind only Saint Joseph's in the third of four preliminary heats. The Dragons' time of 6:45.98 was good enough to earn a spot in the championship final along with the winners of the four heats and one other second-place finisher. In the final, the Dragons edged Trinity at the line for fourth place as only Bucknell and Saint Joseph's finished earlier. Bucknell's winning time was 6:39.57 while the Hawks' boat crossed at 6:42.70. Drexel was credited with a time of 6:47.90 while Trinity finished at 6:48.29. Fordham took fifth place while Rutgers finished sixth with both boats crossing the line more than 10 seconds after the Dragons.
The Drexel's other entries in the race did not fare as well. The women's novice eight took third in its heat as did the junior varsity eight. Both boats were up against tough competition as the novice boat finished behind Bucknell and Navy while the junior varsity crossed after Trinity and Navy in its heat.
