
Virginia Commonwealth Closes Out Dragons, 4-0, at CAA Tournament

Norfolk, Va. - Drexel saw one of its most successful seasons in the program's history come to an end with a 4-0 loss to second-seeded Virginia Commonwealth at the CAA Women's Tennis Tournament. The Dragons fell at first and second doubles to yeild a team point to the Rams and VCU closed out the match with wins at third, fourth and sixth singles.
Despite surrendring the doubles point, the Dragons put up a battle in singles play agains the higher seeded Rams. At first singles, All-CAA selection Zineb Hilali lost a close first set to All-CAA Second Teamer Ana Bara 6-4 and was tied at 1-1 in the second when VCU clinched the match. Gozde Unkaya lost a tight 7-5 set against All-CAA First Teamer Kateryna Yergina and was tied with her in the second set when the match ended. At fifth singles Elise Leizerovich played a nip-and-tuck match against Olena Leonchuk, losing the first set 6-4 and trailing 3-2 in the second before the match wrapped.
The Dragons set a program record with 14 wins this season in dual match play. They were 14-3 overall and went 2-1 in CAA competition despite playing a truncated schedule due to bouts with inclement weather late in the season. Seniors Emily and Mellissa Lewis, closed out their Drexel careers on the court as two of the programs top doubles players and a major piece in the foundation to this successful season.
