Philadelphia - James Madison scored seven of the first eight goals of the second half to pull away from Drexel for a 14-6 victory in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse action. Kim Griffin scored five goals for the Dukes while Katie Lawson and Charlotte Wood each led the Dragons with two goals apiece. The win moved the 20th-ranked Dukes to 5-6, 1-1 CAA on the season while the Dragons fell to 7-4, 2-0 CAA.
The game was tightly contested in the first half though the visitors scored the first three goals of the contest. The Dragons battled back with two goals just 16 seconds apart as Lawson put the Dragons on the board with 16:10 remaining in the first half and Amanda Gregg converted a free-position shot to bring Drexel to within a goal. The Dukes went on another 3-0 run, capped by Jaime Dardine's unassisted goal with 27 seconds remaining in the period. Just before the first half horn, Wood took a Nicole Musto pass to score with just one second remaining on the scoreboard. The goal brought the Dragons back to within three goals and seemed to sway the momentum. However, the Dukes seemed unfazed coming out of the break as they scored the first four of the second period to lead 10-3. After a Katie Blazer goal on a perfect pass from Becca Drylie-Perkins, James Madison's Griffin went on a 3-0 run that was all her own to put the game away.
James Madison outshot Drexel, 29-18, and corralled 24 groundballs to the Dragons' 18. Drexel won 11 of the game's 21 draws but committed 26 turnovers to the Dukes' 17. Lauren LaBella made eight saves in goal while James Madison's Morgan Kelly made four saves. Katie Blazer led the Dragons with four draw controls while defenders Josie Haller and Sarah Bauer each had a team-high four groundballs. Ali Allen played a solid game off the bench with an assist, three groundballs, two caused turnovers and a draw control.
Drexel returns to action Friday, April 10 as the Dragons host rival Delaware at 6:00 p.m. Prior to the game, Josie Haller, Kimberly Kabernagel and Lauren LaBella will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities.
