Towson, Md. - Drexel (24-21, 7-13) concluded its 2009 season with a 9-1 loss at Towson. The Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored six runs en route to a five-inning victory. Paige Collings drove in Drexel's lone run of the game on an RBI single in the fourth inning that scored Lisa Williams from third. Williams finished her Drexel career with 101 runs scored and she joins classmate Christina Rodriguez as two of just three players to reach the 100-run plateau at Drexel. The victory secured Towson's (32-20, 13-8) position in the upcoming CAA Tournament.
Shannon Johnston earned her 20th win of the season for Towson. She allowed just one earned run on one hit and two walks through four innings of work.
Amanda Shattuck incurred the loss after letting in five runs on six hits in two thirds of an inning. Hillary Allen threw three and one third innings in relief and let in two more runs on five hits and two walks.
Stef Streets went 2-for-3 for Towson with two RBIs and a solo homerun in the fourth inning. Andrea Stevenson also drove in two runs for the Tigers and Emily Gould recorded a 2-for-3 peformance at the plate.
The Dragons did their best to stave off a five-inning finish when Elena Fravel drew a lead-off walk and took second on a wild pitch. Kristen Beaver followed with a walk, giving the Dragons runners on first and second with one out. But the threat was quickly erased on a groundout by Devon Metcalf and a fly out to center by Williams.
The Dragons wrapped up their second straight winning season this year. It was the first time since 1992-93 that the squad has posted back-to-back records over .500. Seniors Kristen Beaver, Jessica Bongiovanni, Christina Rodriguez, Amanda Shattuck, Lisa Williams and Sandi Wambold completed their Drexel careers with their names all over the Dragons' record books. Rodriguez, Beaver and Wambold all rank among the top 10 in career home runs at Drexel. Wambold finishes her career as Drexel's co-leader in career homers, along with junior Ashley Botelho who also has 18 career round-trippers. In addition to joining the 100-run club, Rodriguez and Williams are two of Drexel's top three leaders in career steals. And Wambold and Rodriguez both end their careers among the Dragons' top five all-time in RBIs.
