Philadelphia - Levi Houapeu recorded a hat-trick to lead his UMBC team to its seventh straight victory to start the season, 3-0 over Drexel (4-2-0). The Retrievers, who received votes in the national soccer coaches poll this week, outshot the Dragons 16-8 while improving to 7-0-0 on the season. Rookie keeper Tim Washam recorded seven saves in his second career start in net for Drexel.
The Dragons outcornered the Retrievers 7-4 but failed to capitalize with a score, as the team was held off the scoreboard for the first time this season. Freshman keeper Phil Saunders made four stops for his third shutout of the season. The loss is Drexel's first defeat on the road this season.
Levi Houapeu scored for UMBC in the ninth minute when he knocked in the rebound off his own shot after a save by Tim Washam. The goal, Houapeu's sixth of the season, gave the Retrievers a 1-0 lead in the early going. He put in his second goal of the match in the 25th minute after an intercepting a pass Houapeu's shot from 14 yards out on the right side again found the net for a 2-0 UMBC lead.
The forward completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute on a cross from Andrew Bulls to the right side of the goal box. Houapeu drilled a shot through the hands of Washam from 12 yards out to give his team a commanding 3-0 advantage.
The Dragons are back in action on Sept. 22 when they host Iona at Vidas Field in a 4:00 match.
